BALLINASLOE TOWN AFC IN THE 1990's
1989-90 This new decade was something of a watershed for the club
as the Ballinasloe Senior team reached the final of the Connacht Challenge
Cup and despite losing the first leg 5-1 they battled back to narrowly lose
out on a scoreline of 6 goals to 5 in the final versus Castlebar who were
thankful to the crossbar and post as their second goalie. The following
year they reached another final in the form of the Connacht Incentive Cup
narrowly going down 2-1 by University College Galway. The 2nd team won
the double in the 2nd Division under Harris Burke and assistant Noel Kenny
with the Under 13's winning the Roscommon League, the 1991/92 season
saw the 2nd team back in Division 2 after their one year in Division 1 but
despite this disappointment they had the consolation of winning the Division
1 Cup in the season but also immediately bounced back under the tutelage
of Pat Campbell winning promotion once again in season 1992/93. The
juvenile section was extremely unlucky during this period of years as plenty
of finals and runners up spots but the all important trophies remained elusive, that was until the 1993/94 season.
1993/94 saw the U18's managed by Tom Donohue win the Roscommon League
and in 1994/95 John Carey's U12's won the Athlone League, the U13's under manager
Vinnie Fennell won the Roscommon League and the U10's won the mini final in the
Athlone & District School Boys League, this season represented something of a hiatus
for the club as regards juvenile soccer.
1995/96 saw the 2nd team win the Division 1 Cup and win promotion to the premier
league managed by Johnny Walsh, this season also saw the Senior team win the
Connacht Senior League under Davie Cummins and his assistant Tom Donohue as
well as getting to another final in the form of the Connacht Senior League 1st Division.
Incidentally the club's U12's also won the ADSL with John Carey and Vincent Fennell
at the helm. The following season 1996/97 saw another cup success with the 2nd team
once again winning the Division 1 cup. This year also saw Ballinasloe's first ever
international soccer match held at the Curragh Grounds where Ireland Schoolboys
played their Welsh counterparts with Noel Gannon being the chief organiser. Seniors
also made it to the Connacht Cup Final losing to Ballina.
1997/98 This season saw a major change as the club withdrew its Senior team from the Connacht Senior League due to players being unable to commit to the requirements needed at this level and played just one team in the Roscommon & District Junior League. The team performed well and got to the 1st Division Cup final narrowly losing out to St Johns Athletic on a penalty scoreline of 5-4 and a stirring second half to the season saw them finish strongly as manager Johnny Walsh and coach Paul Riddell pushed them to the limit. The juveniles had an amazing season as U10's, U11's, U15's and U16's all won their respective leagues in the ADSL.
1998/99 saw the club play two teams in the Roscommon & District League, the A team under Noel Lyons and coach Paul Riddell won the 1st Division and gained promotion to the premier league, whilst Pat Campbell continued his good run winning the 3rd Division and gaining promotion once again. In this season the club entered 10 teams in the Athlone & District Schoolboys League with U10's B, U12's A & B winning their Divisions. the club also won the inaugural "Ballinasloe Voluntary Organisation of the Year" awarded to club Chairman Pat Campbell by Noel Madden of the Ballinasloe Credit Union. this seemed a fitting tribute and a matter of pride for everyone at the club as the decade came to a close.
